TMS for Migraines: A Drug-Free Path to Fewer Headache Days

More than one billion people worldwide live with migraines, yet it remains one of the most undertreated neurological conditions on the planet. Migraine ranks among the top causes of disability worldwide, and while many medications are available, not everyone finds relief, and side effects can be just as frustrating as the migraines themselves. What is TMS?

Beyond headache reduction, TMS offers a meaningful advantage in its side effect profile. Traditional treatments like triptans, CGRP inhibitors, beta blockers, or anticonvulsants can cause weight gain, fatigue, nausea, and brain fog. TMS, by contrast, acts locally on the brain without affecting the entire body, avoiding many of the systemic side effects associated with drugs. The most commonly reported TMS side effects — mild scalp tingling, a slight headache after treatment, or facial muscle twitching during stimulation — are generally mild and short-lived. The most common side effects of TMS are mild headache, scalp discomfort, and temporary hearing impairment.

What can you expect?

A typical course of TMS therapy for migraines involves in-clinic sessions that fit into a patient’s regular routine. Sessions typically run 20 minutes, five times a week, for about six weeks. Patients remain awake and alert throughout, often noticing fewer and less intense migraines after the second or third week of treatment. TMS can be used as a standalone approach or alongside existing medications as part of a personalized care plan. TMS holds notable advantages including non-invasiveness, repeatability, and the potential for personalized treatment methods — qualities that make it well-suited for chronic migraine patients who need flexible, long-term management strategies.
